(A few of) The best commercials

By admin in Advertising

Well, not really. I leave it up to the respective marketers to decide if it was really that good. If it was effective, made an impact on brand, sales or both. I stumbled upon the Nike FuelBand video yesterday and couldn’t get it out of my head. I decided last night to make a post about commercials with an impact like this. So what’s to come is a list of very creative, impactful work that I wanted to gather, if only for my own sake of collecting them in one place. The only selection criterium being the impact they had on me, as a consumer of media on the outside of these great brands, very much colored by this time of day, phase in life, favorite brands and individual taste.

1) Apple, “Grazy Ones”, TBWA\Chiat\Day

2) Chrysler, “Born of Fire”, by W+K

3) Barack Obama, “Yes We Can”, by Will.I.Am and Jesse Dylan

4) Apple, “1984″, by Chiat/Day

5) Nike FuelBand, by W+K

6) Apple, “Get a Mac” series, by TBWA

7) Budweiser, “Wassup”, DDB

8 ) ESPN, ” This is SportsCenter” series, by W+K

9) Volkswagen, “The Force”, by Deutsch

10) Google, “Parisian Love”, Google Creative Lab

11) Audi, “Goodnight”, by Venables Bell & Partners

12) Sony Bravia, “Balls”, by Fallon

13) Powerade, “Very Real Power”, by W+K

Imported from Detroit

Love this commercial, lot’s of theatre, lots of drama. W+K did a great job linking the brand and its personalities to its city of origin, turning the problems there to a advantage. Great copy. Oh, and very American…. no European adman would link a luxury car brand with Eminem.

Logorama – when mascots go bad

By admin in Open Branding

Logorama is a 16-minute animated film, starring more than 2,500 well-known logos and mascots. French studio H5, creators of the film, explained the idea behind it as follows: “Logorama presents us with an over-marketed world built only from logos and real trademarks that are destroyed by a series of natural disasters (including an earthquake and a tidal wave of oil). Logotypes are used to describe an alarming universe (similar to the one that we are living in) with all the graphic signs that accompany us everyday in our lives. This over-organized universe is violently transformed by the cataclysm becoming fantastic and absurd. It shows the victory of the creative against the rational, where nature and human fantasy triumph.” (Design Boom . Retrieved February 8, 2010.)

I discovered this video at LeWeb in 2010, when they played it during the break. Ironically, it was one of the highlights for me of that event. I haven’t heard much about it since, no complaining ‘brand owners’, no law suits…hoping for a sequel!

By admin in Open Branding

The Giro came to Amsterdam for no less than 3 stages and painted the city pink On Monday, the cyclists took off from the Zuidas, the business district of Amsterdam and basically the Netherlands. Cyclists, fine. Look at the great team cars following them.

…with a suitcase full of experiences and insights.
Building on the MBA trip to Silicon Valley last November, we spent a week in Beijing, China, with our class and the class of 2011. As I let it all sink in some more, have a look at the exciting schedule for the week. I have the ambition to write some postson the remarkable experiences. Of course I had the same ambition with the Silicon Valley trip and this is still in draft….time time time. Better get to work.

Kick-off MBA thesis: going open…

By admin in MBA

I have known for the past 18 months this moment would come and still it feels I was unprepared. Getting started on an academic thesis is hard, especially on a Sunday morning after an honest week at the office and a party in the weekend. But we’re off, all systems go. Read the rest of this entry »

Internet Speeds and Costs around the world

By admin in Uncategorized

Through Dumpert.nl of all places comes this fun graph on the top 20 nations in broadband. Netherlands sort of best of the rest, Korea and Japan look very very attractive. Even more interesting now would be graphs showing the results linked to this differences: education? health care? Entertainment? What do the Japan and Korea people get out of this advantage and should the other countries take notice? My gut says yes, if only for the possibilities.
